Design the safety in
For families with young children, AS 1926.1 compliant fencing is non-negotiable, and a sensible shallow zone matters. A wide, gently graded entry - a beach entry or generous steps - lets small kids and parents get in and out easily and safely.
A shallow zone and a deeper end
The classic family pool has a shallow area where small children can stand and play, grading to a deeper end for swimming and jumping. A 7 to 9 metre pool gives enough length for both. A sun ledge in the shallow end is popular for toddlers and for parents to sit.
Build for heavy use
A family pool gets used hard. Durable interior finishes, robust coping, slip-resistant surround paving and quality equipment all pay off over years of summers. This is not the place to cut corners on the finish.
Think about resale
A well-designed family pool adds genuine appeal in family suburbs - the kind of suburbs where buyers expect a pool. A sensible, well-built family pool is an asset; an awkward or poorly finished one is not. Design it as something that adds value, not just a feature.
